Brooklyn Marine Terminal: Past, Present, & What’s Next for Red Hook?

Overview

An immersive evening exploring the future of the Brooklyn Marine Terminal (BMT)—a site at the heart of Red Hook’s working waterfront.

Join us on Friday, January 30th from 6–9 PM at Compère Collective (351 Van Brunt Street) for an immersive evening exploring the future of the Brooklyn Marine Terminal (BMT)—a site at the heart of Red Hook’s working waterfront, climate resilience, and community identity.

Hosted by Resilient Red Hook in collaboration with Pratt Institute’s Graduate Center for Planning and the Environment, this free public event invites you to engage with a compelling exhibit, share your ideas, and join a growing conversation about what’s at stake in the transformation of this critical 122-acre site.

What’s at Stake? As proposals circulate for thousands of new housing units and large-scale land use changes at the BMT, local voices must be at the table. Can Red Hook preserve its industrial jobs, maritime heritage, and climate readiness while adapting to future needs?

What You’ll Experience:

  • A student-designed visual exhibit covering the past, present, and speculative futures of the BMT

  • Interactive stations to share your feedback, priorities, and neighborhood knowledge

  • Light refreshments, printed resources, and opportunities to connect with neighbors and advocates

Who Should Attend:Red Hook residents, workers, students, organizers, artists, business owners, policymakers, elected officials—anyone who cares about the future of Red Hook and our waterfront community.

Date & Time:Friday, January 30, 2026 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM EST

Location:Compère Collective 351 Van Brunt StreetBrooklyn, NY 11231

All Maritime Plan for the Brooklyn Marine Terminal - presented by Tom Fox of the City Club of NY

All-Maritime Plan Puts Brooklyn Marine Terminal Back to Work

Alternative vision treats publicly owned port as freight and emergency infrastructure—not surplus land

WHAT: Press briefing to release a new plan for the Brooklyn Marine Terminal (BMT). Developed by Resilient Red Hook and the City Club of New York, the Blue Highway Hub proposal offers an all-maritime alternative to the redevelopment framework currently being floated by the NYC Economic Development Corporation.

WHEN: Tuesday, January 27, 2026 10:00 a.m

WHERE: Zoom Access: Get the link here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tzcPdfHATdyOJ5YOo7WFQQ#/registration

WHO: Victoria Alexander, Chair, Resilient Red Hook, Tom Fox, Trustee, City Club of New York. Council Member Alexa Avilés, business owners, Red Hook residents, and members of the maritime community.

WHY: Nearly 90 percent of goods entering New York City arrive by truck across aging and vulnerable infrastructure. The all-maritime Blue Highway Hub plan shows how restoring Brooklyn Marine Terminal’s freight capacity can strengthen supply chains, reduce congestion and emissions, and keep goods moving when other systems fail.

THE PLAN CALLS FOR:

• Cost-conscious modernization of BMT largely “as is”

• Expanded wharfage for freight and emergency operations

• Emergency-ready infrastructure designed for continuous operation

• Maritime job pathways with training and apprenticeships

• Preservation of Red Hook’s working waterfront identity

This City of Water Day event activates the Red Hook network to participate in the NYC Emergency Management Strengthening Communities program. The event begins with an elemental workshop, led by the John Jay College water and climate justice team, exploring the four elements—Earth (boundaries), Fire (imagination), Space (letting go), and Water (flowing)—to reconnect with core values and co-create an emergency preparedness plan rooted in resilience. Through interactive activities, we will gain practical skills to stay grounded, adaptive, and collaborative in the face of community challenges. Together, we’ll turn disruption into possibility by learning from both place and one another. Following the elemental workshop, we will learn about Strengthening Communities from an NYC Emergency Management team member with time for brainstorming and questions. Strengthening Communities is an innovative and collaborative program that funds and supports community coalitions to Prepare, Respond, and Recover from emergencies through planning. The Red Hook network will participate in Strengthening Communities in fall 2025. * Please bring a chair or blanket for sitting during the event. "It’s now been 70 years since the highway was completed and its age is showing. Now is the perfect time to reimagine the BQE and repair the damage it continues to inflict on the community."– Segregation by Design

The Story of the BQE Documentary Screening at Green Lung Studio in Red Hook
March 13th 6:30-8:00pm

The Story of the BQE documentary screening, part of a Film Series around Community Activism hosted by Resilient Red Hook, is followed by a Q&A with former City Council Member Carlos Menchaca and filmmaker Adam Paul Susaneck. This event is free and open to the public – registration is required. Space is limited.

The Story of the BQE documentary, by architect Adam Paul Susaneck, Founder of Segregation by Design, produced by the Institute for Public Architecture with NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate, uses archival footage and photography to show how the construction of the 35-mile-long Brooklyn-Queens Expressway demolished historic neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens, divided communities, and displaced hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers across the two boroughs. The Story of the BQE Film and Oral History project includes a web-based oral history archive comprising interviews with Brooklyn and Queens residents around the impact the highway has on their lives. This project expands IPA’s work since 2020 to highlight the institutional segregation and environmental impacts created by the highway and help raise awareness of the historical exclusion of underserved communities in decision-making about their physical space. For more information, visit The Story of the BQE.

The project is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts; the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature; by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council; NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate; Big Oh Bijoux; Sasaki; KVL Audio Visual Services; Municipal Art Society Enduring Culture Initiative; Simon’s Hardware; and private donations.

Battle for Brooklyn Film Screening

Battle for Brooklyn Film Screening

Part of the Film Series around Community Activism . Following the screening, engage in a lively discussion with special guests.

Event Description: Screening of Battle for Brooklyn and panel discussion with activists

Part of the Film Series around Community Activism

Resilient Red Hook and the Brooklyn Public Library invite you to a special screening of Battle for Brooklyn on Friday February 28th 6:30pm , as part of our ongoing Film Series around Community Activism. This event serves as both an educational gathering for community members and a 20-year reunion for activists and neighbors who fought-albeit unsuccessfully–the Atlantic Yards project (since renamed Pacific Park), including the Barclays Center.

In light of the redevelopment of the Brooklyn Marine Terminal, this screening aims to inspire and inform current and future community action efforts. Battle for Brooklyn tells the compelling story of the grassroots resistance to the Atlantic Yards Project, a controversial development that displaced hundreds of people and businesses using eminent domain and public subsidies, claiming it would transform a “blighted” area and deliver the public good of “jobs, housing, and hoops.”.

Directed by Suki Hawley and Michael Galinsky, and produced by David Beilinson, the film captures the resilience and determination of Brooklynites who stood against powerful interests. Today, the project, with eight towers and the Barclays Center, is half-finished, with public benefits far behind promises. While the real-estate company sponsoring the project exited at a loss, the owners of the Brooklyn Nets, enriched by the new subsidized arena, are big winners.

Event Highlights:

  • Celebrate the legacy of activism with a reunion of those who fought against Atlantic Yards 20 years ago

  • Engage in discussions on lessons from the Atlantic Yards battle and results and their relevance to current challenges like the Brooklyn Marine Terminal redevelopment.

  • Connect with neighbors and activists passionate about fostering resilient and equitable development

Event Details:

Join us to honor the past, learn for the future, and reaffirm the power of collective action in shaping our neighborhoods.

Ally afterparty at Sunny’s to continue the conversations!

New School Year, Same Dirty Buses: A Town Hall on Air Quality

Adam Armstrong has been leading the charge on behalf of Red Hook to fight for clean air and clean electric non-polluting technologies in our transportation systems. He will be joining the panel on Monday Sept 24th with the New York League of Conservation Voters, to push for electrifying our school bus fleets.

They’re big, they’re yellow and they’re polluting our air. School buses are the largest form of mass transit in the United States, and they desperately need an upgrade. Emissions from diesel school buses are linked to asthma, chronic respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, cancers, and even higher mortality rates. No one should have to breathe in dangerous pollutants while riding the bus, especially when cleaner, safer alternatives, such as all-electric school buses, are available.

Join us at our town hall as we head back to school and learn about the need for better busing from our diverse panel of speakers. We’re bringing together experts and local activists to discuss the impact of diesel school buses and explore pathways to going electric.
